Default Ultimate Dinopedia iPad App

Well, I don't really have my own iPad. But for those of you who do...

It looks expensive, but otherwise it seems like a really great dino-app. What do you think?

oh you!
I was on my way here to post a thread on this

I haz an iPad and spotted this last night but I'm unsure about it. Plus side unlike a book you can constantly update it with new findings, names, and the latest debates etc.
I could get this......and report how good it is......
or you guys can give me the money and I'd buy and use it on your behalf

Yeah, a JPL Member's report would really help a lot of us who are iPad owners. As for having everyone chip in so you can use it... well, that just wouldn't be the same as owning it ourselves, would it?

Another good thing that the article mentions is that "more than 15 people are listed as the staff for the app, chief among them are 'Dino' Don Lessem, an author of more than 40 dinosaur books and an advisor for 'Jurassic Park'; Franco Tempesta, a specialist in naturalistic illustration, particularly dinosaurs and primitive mammals; and Rodolfo Coria, the consulting paleontologist for the project, who directed the field study of Argentinosaurus, possibly the largest land animal that ever lived, and Giganotosaurus." So I imagine this thing is pretty up to date on the latest findings.

I checked up on the app store and it looks mint! I've taken the plunge and bought it at £3.49 and it's loading now.....must take a hell of a while though!

Wonder if it'll have pterosaurs and marine creatures as well? If this is as awesome as it looks then I hope they do Cenozoic and Paleozoic creatures! Ohhh.....

Okay I bought this and will give full review soon. But it's not as good as it's made out to be.

First of all, awesome artwork but there is NOT over 700 species....it's barely pushing 200 and it's designed for kids......X/

Kinda a disappointment

FULL REVIEW

Well okay the first thing that hits you when you open up the app is "National Geographic" then slap you're hit with "Kids!" and a childish graphic. Not a good start but don't worry it gets better....kinda.

So once you get over the shock that this app is directed at kids you suddenly realise "oh god. There goes all the paleontology and findings and new theories you were hoping for.
Now there is several things to do here....

The family tree is quite simple but affective (there's a goof in which they've mixed up the bird-hipped branch with the lizard-hipped branch) and easy for kids to understand

Theres a table of contents with about 200 dinosaurs explained, with each an illustration, a picture info, story, fun fact and dino stats. In the story it gives the option for a voice to read out the facts which is extreamly useful for those hard to pronounce names. But it's terrible as the voice sounds like a camp robot who took a "dramatic reading" class and failed horribly. In fact it's enough to make even little kids cringe, nevermind seasoned and expert dino fans.

Then there's videos for about 11 dinosaurs and one man explaining how his friend named a dinosaur after him. The videos are soundless (apart from the guy) and really crude animation for the dinosaurs, showing off weird walking movements and the Dracorex video isn't them hedbutting they're just touching heads feeblily.

Now the dinosaur profiles are good and there are A LOT more dinosaurs shown in these....almost every one discovered and it just gives you a few basic statistics and the same guy pro-nouncing the names. It does not, however, have an illustration of every one of them, instead it reuses the same picture for a dromeosaur or a sauropod or a theropod. even the dinos that have a proper dinopedia page get reused pictures (Parasaurolophus has a Corythosaurus picture for example cause it's the 'default')

The illustrations in the Dinopedia page however are absolutly beautiful though! They are all bright, colourful and interesting to view and each dino is shown off in an orignal way with no reused colour schemes from any shows or movies.

I took some screenshots with my iPad for a few of them....

Also a video review made by.....some guy
